Alumna Rachel Stokely Horkan, a high school mathematics teacher at Jones County High School, was recently named one of 14 beginning educators across the state to receive a Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grant.
Horkan, the College of Education’s 2007 Outstanding Honors Student, graduated in May with three degrees: a B.S. in mathematics, B.S. Ed. in math education, and an M.Ed. in math education.
The $1,000 Georgia Power grants are awarded to graduates of Georgia’s 17 public four-year colleges and universities with a state-approved teacher education program who are in their first year of teaching. The funds enable these first-year teachers to purchase supplies beyond those provided by the schools.
Candidates for the grants must have been in the top 25 percent of their class academically, demonstrate an aptitude for teaching and be recommended by education faculty members.
The grants will be presented at an awards luncheon Saturday, October 13 at the Georgia Power corporate headquarters in Atlanta.
