Roger Winston was instrumental in creating UGA’s doctoral program in Student Affairs Administration in 1990.
Roger B. Winston, Jr., professor emeritus of the College of Education, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).
The award recognizes Winston’s high level of scholarly productivity and leadership sustained over more than 20 years in the field of student affairs.
Winston previously received the Outstanding Contribution to Literature and Research from the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) in 2003 and the ACPA’s Contribution to Knowledge Award in 1990.
His work, which has appeared in most of the journals and publications associated with the field, has shaped and defined the student affairs field into a strong, theory- and research-based profession. He has authored or edited 13 books on student affairs and has written more than 100 book chapters and journal articles.
Winston led the field in developing outcomes assessments. His research with colleagues at UGA led to the creation of the Student Development Task and Lifestyle Assessment, a valuable tool for both practitioners and researchers that is closely based on human and student development theory.
Winston was instrumental in creating UGA’s doctoral program in Student Affairs Administration in 1990 and served as the program’s graduate coordinator until his retirement in 2002.
Winston received his Ph.D. in counseling and student personnel services from UGA in 1973.
