A Look at the Four Dean Finalists

With the four finalists for dean of the College of Education visiting with faculty and staff over the next three weeks, here’s a brief glance at who they are:
Steven R. Yussen


Steven Yussen |
Steven R.Yussen is a professor and director of undergraduate studies and the Honors Program in the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota.
He served as the 12th dean of the College of Education at the University of Minnesota from 1998-2006.
Yussen came to Minnesota from the University of Iowa, where he also headed the College of Education. He is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, having received a Ph.D. from the Institute of Child Development in 1973. Known for his research on children’s learning and cognitive development.

Marilyn Newhoff


Marilyn Newhoff |
Marilyn Newhoff, an experienced administrator and internationally known scholar in the field of communication sciences and disorders, has served as dean of the College of Health and Human Services at San Diego State University since 2005.
Newhoff served as interim dean in 2004-05. She was Director of the School of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences from 2001-04, and was among the SDSU faculty involved in teaching a joint doctorate program (with UCSD) in language and communicative disorders, ranked among the best in the country.
Newhoff was also instrumental in implementing a joint SDSU-UCSD doctorate of audiology degree program in 2003. The highly competitive program is designed for individuals who intend to specialize in clinical practice. Her expertise includes the normal and disordered aspects of child language acquisition as well as neurological communicative disorders, especially in post-cerebrovascular (stroke) patients.
A native of Oklahoma, Newhoff earned undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Alabama and a Ph.D. from the University of Memphis, which also awarded her distinguished alumna status in recognition of her contributions to the discipline of communication science and disorders. She was founding editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Newhoff was a professor in SDSU's Department of Communicative Disorders from 1978-86. She left to join the faculty of the University of Georgia, and later became chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders there. From 1996-99, Newhoff served as senior associate dean for The Graduate School at the University of Georgia.

Richard L. Hayes

Richard L. Hayes, has served as dean of the College of Education at the University of South Alabama since 2004.
Hayes was a professor of counseling and human development services at the University of Georgia’s College of Education before joining USA. He previously held faculty positions at Colgate University and Bradley University.
Hayes, a former public school teacher and counselor, received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University and his master’s degree in counselor education and doctorate in counseling psychology from Boston University.
Hayes’ work at UGA included developing and adopting multicultural standards for instruction and evaluation. He also diversified the faculty and student body through an active recruitment program, which included mentoring.
He has been a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Japan, a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo and the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, and is an international faculty member of the European Institute of Psychotherapy.
A Boston, Mass., native, Hayes was a member of the UGA faculty for more than 16 years. His department was consistently recognized by U.S. News and World Report among the Top 10 graduate programs of its type in the nation.
Among the numerous awards that Hayes has received are the Presidential Award, Professional Service Award, Foreign Research Fellow and Kuhmerker Award for distinguished contributions to research, teaching and service to the association and the field of moral education.

Fayneese Miller

Fayneese Miller has served as dean of the College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont since 2005. She is also a professor of human development, educational leadership and social policy and executive director of the James Jeffords Institute for Educational Excellence.
While at UVM, Miller has created the Research Council for the College of Education and Social Services to provide funding and offer constructive feedback to faculty wishing to collaborate on research projects or grant opportunities. She has been actively involved in the development of an undergraduate major in educational foundation and policy studies.
Prior to coming to Vermont, she spent 20-plus years at Brown University where she was associate professor of education and human development and an internationally recognized expert on the social, academic and political development of adolescents. She led Brown’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America and was the university’s first coordinator and chair of ethnic studies.
Miller earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hampton University and her master’s and doctoral degrees in experimental psychology from Texas Christian University. She followed with a post-doctorate in applied social psychology at Yale University from 1981-1983.
