UGA Ranked Nation's 2nd Most Prolific University In Education Research

The University of Georgia is ranked the second most prolific university in the nation in education research, based on the percentage of papers contributed to the field over a recent five-year period, according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).

UGA, which contributed 201 papers for 1.55 percentage of the field, trailed only the University of Wisconsin at Madison, which contributed 202 papers for 1.56 percent of the field. Others in the top five included the University of Michigan, Indiana University and the University of Maryland at College Park.

The ranking was published on SCI-BYTES: What’s New in Research, a feature within INCITES – a web-based editorial component of ISI Research Services Group, which analyzes research performance of companies, institutions, countries and journals and ranks them by field.

“These rankings are important in that they confirm other significant indicators of quality that the faculty in the College of Education are at the cutting edge of their disciplines and that the best journals in the field accept and publish their research,” said George Hynd, UGA Distinguished Research Professor and associate dean for research. “It is important to realize that many of these journals reject 60-85 percent of all manuscripts submitted to them for publication. So, there is a great deal of competition among scholars to publish their research in the most prestigious journals. Clearly, our faculty have succeed wonderfully in making the results of their research available to the global community through these publications.”

Over the last two years, the ISI has ranked the nation’s most prolific universities in business and economics, literary studies, neurosciences and behavior, electrical and electronic engineering, art and architecture, dentistry, oral surgery and medicine, microbiology, history, philosophy, artificial intelligence and robotics, mathematics, civil engineering, performing arts, ecology, entomology and pest control, computer science, sociology and anthropology, law, communication, space science, food science and nutrition, archaelology, and pharmacology.

“These kinds of rankings indicate that the citizens of Georgia are supporting some of the best scholars in the country in the field of education,” said Hynd. “It should also be recognized that these nationally and internationally recognized scholars often work with Georgia’s Department of Education and are in our public schools daily trying to improve teacher effectiveness and increase student learning.”
