The University of Georgia College of Education named Virginia Pate, an exercise and sport science major within the department of kinesiology, its Outstanding Honor Student for 2005.
Pate, of Winston-Salem, N.C., focused her area of emphasis in biomechanics and is working on a dual degree in mathematics. She has a cumulative grade point average of 3.95.
A member of the UGA women’s varsity swim team, she has participated in numerous SEC and NCAA Swimming Championship events in her four years at UGA. Pate served as co-captain during the 2003-2004 school year.
She has been the recipient of both academic and athletic honors and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, Golden Key, Phi Beta Kappa, Blue Key, and the Student Athletic Advisory Council among others.
Volunteerism has been a big part of Pate’s college experience. She is a mentor in Clarke County schools, a Well-and-Wise Reader at St. Mary’s Hospital Pediatric Rehab Center, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a volunteer at the Athens Food Bank, a member of the Athens Area Child Abuse Prevention Council, and has participated with Habitat for Humanity.
Pate was recognized at the college’s Spring Celebration honoring faculty and alumni accomplishments held on April 28 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
