Pamela Roach, a 2003 Ph.D. graduate in social science education, has received the Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation.
Roach received a $1,000 award for her dissertation, which focused on how younger, pre-service teachers impact their students' political socialization.
Specifically, Roach examined secondary pre-service teachers' perceptions, attitudes and beliefs about civic engagement and whether they perceived their role as one of promoting or developing civic engagement.
Kappa Delta Pi selected Roach for the award based on the significance of the topic, appropriateness of methodology, writing clarity and potential contribution to the education field.
Roach plans to use the cash prize to help fund more data collection this summer. She also hopes to work on having her dissertation published.
Roach is a member of the American Political Science Association, Georgia Council for the Social Studies, Kappa Delta Pi and the National Council for the Social Studies.
Roach received her master's in political science from the University of Arkansas and her bachelor's in political science from Arkansas State University. She currently teaches social studies at North Cobb High School in Cobb County.
