Bob Rogan, a fifth-year doctoral student in elementary education, has been named Teacher of the Year at Yargo Elementary School in Barrow County.
Rogan, who teaches fourth- and fifth-grade students, was voted Teacher of the Year by fellow teachers and administrators. The honor puts him in the running to represent Barrow County as Teacher of the Year when that selection is made in the next several weeks.
“I would be honored, but I realize there are many excellent teachers in the county,” Rogan says.
Last academic year, Rogan helped his fourth-grade students with a service-learning project to raise money for new physical education equipment. The project was designed to provide students with educational experiences while at the same time benefiting the community.
“The idea was actually constructed by the students with a little guidance from me,” Rogan explains. “The project happened to fit well with the requirements of a class I was taking, so we used it as a service-learning project.”
Rogan's students identified the need for new physical education equipment and hosted a 24-hour walkathon where they raised around $3,000 for new equipment. The service-learning project has continued into this school year, and Rogan's students recently held a raffle to generate more money for equipment.
Rogan received his bachelor's degree in political science from Clemson University and his master's in elementary education from Piedmont College. Rogan's dissertation is related to students' beliefs about power in a democratically constructed classroom. He plans to graduate May 2005.
