Maria Winfield, a doctoral candidate in the department of language and literacy education, recently received the J. William Fanning Graduate Award from the University of Georgia’s Graduate School.
The award provides $5,000 and is given each year to support a graduate student with excellent leadership qualities.
Winfield is in the fourth and final year of her program. Her research focuses on exploring the connections between language and visual arts within a culturally relevant afterschool program for African-American Middle School girls.
Winfield, from Almagordo, NM, received her master’s at the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College and her bachelor’s in education at Northern Arizona University.
