Saehee Chang, administrative specialist in the International Student Life Office, and Daphne Durham, educational program specialist in the Office of International Education, along with Dawn Clemeshaw of Valdosta State University, have received the “Best of Region” award for their training session for foreign student advisers entitled Navigating Rough Waters: Racism and Cultural Transition to the U.S.
They presented the training at the Nov. 9 Southern Regional (Region VII) meeting of NAFSA: Association of International Educators in Asheville, N.C.
The award is given to the one session from the more than 60 offerings that the regional leadership wishes to recommend for presentation at the international conference of the association. Chang, Clemeshaw and Durham will offer the training session again at the international conference in San Diego in May.

James Cobb, professor and head of the history department, is president of the Southern Historical Association.

Richard Fayrer-Hosken, associate professor of large animal medicine, received the Theriogenologist of the Year Award from the American College of Theriogenologists, sponsored by the Monsanto Corporation (theriogenology is the study of reproduction in animals). The $2,500 award was presented during the annual meeting of the College of Theriogenologists in Nashville, Tenn.
The annual award is granted to a board certified theriogenologist for research with a significant ecological impact on the world. Fayrer-Hosken’s research in developing an immuno-contraceptive technique for elephants living in confined nature preserves in South Africa has resulted in saving more than 3,500 elephants since 1996.

Klaus Steinbeck,
professor of silviculture, has been elected a Fellow by the Society of American Foresters.
For more than 30 years, Steinbeck has conducted research on short-rotation hardwood forestry, or fiber farming. He has published more than 50 articles on the subject and conducted extensive studies on species screening and spacing as well as experiments to determine the effects of irrigation, fertilization and weed control on growth and production.
Steinbeck served as chairman of the Oconee Chapter, Georgia Division and Southeastern Society of American Foresters. He also was a member of several governor’s task forces and the Georgia Forest Research Council and chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Georgia chapter of the Nature Conservancy. He has been the long-term faculty adviser to UGA’s Student Chapter of SAF, as well as the Forestry Club and Xi Sigma Pi, the natural forest resources honor society. He served on the Accreditation Committee of SAF, which is responsible for accrediting professional forest resources schools and colleges in the United States.
He is a member of the Georgia Forestry Association, the Forest Landowner Association, the Nature Conservancy, the Jayhole Club, AgHon and Xi Sigma Pi.
