Challenge registration
Two Challenge programs are being offered this spring by UGA’s Torrance Center for Creative Studies for pre-schoolers to 8th-grade students.
There are two ways to participate: Challenge Explosions (single Saturday classes) and Saturday Discoveries (a single topic explored for four Saturdays). Each class of Challenge Explosions offers a hands-on approach to learning. Topics vary from art to science to geography. Each class is independent so a child may choose one topic per Saturday. Tuition is $19 per day.
A student will spend four Saturdays learning about a single topic in Saturday Discoveries. Topics include such subjects as oceans, lost ships, crime labs and courtrooms, art and nature, and island exploring. Tuition for Saturday Discoveries is $70.
Both programs will be held Feb. 12 and 26 and March 11 and 25 at Aderhold Hall. Classes begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Students may be dropped off as early as 8:45 a.m., but must be picked up promptly at noon. Students who are four years old (must have turned four prior to Sept. 1, 1999) through the 8th grade may register. The application deadline is Jan. 26.
For more information about registration or to receive applications, call Anita York at 542-5104 or visit the Torrance Center’s Web site and register online (www.coe.uga.edu/torrance).

Application deadline
The deadline for submission of applications and nominations for the 2000--2001 Lilly Teaching Fellows program is March 10.
Established in 1984, the Lilly Teaching Fellows Program provides up to 10 junior tenure-track faculty with an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills by sharing teaching strategies, by interacting with senior faculty mentors who are master teachers and by designing and implementing instructional projects to strengthen each Fellow’s courses and teaching methods.
Candidates must be in their first, second or third year at the university and must have demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching and to the improvement of teaching at UGA. Approximately 20 applicants will be selected for personal interviews; up to 10 Lilly Fellows will be selected from that group.
Detailed information about the Lilly Fellows Program as well as application and nomination forms may be found on the Web at www.isd.uga.edu/facdev/fd.html or by calling the Office of Instructional Support and Development at 542-1355.

H1-B visa shortage
The Office of International Education warns UGA departments considering candidates who will need an H visa for employment that searches should be completed quickly. The number of visas available is limited by Congress to a predetermined number each year, which is almost always reached by late spring and may be reached earlier this year. Advisers in the Office of International Education can discuss the situation and options available. For more information, call Daphne Durham, acting coordinator for international students and scholars, at 542-6622.

Ballroom Dance Club
The UGA Ballroom Dance Club sponsors an open dance session on Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m. in Memorial Hall. For more information, contact Stephanie at 549-2522 (or madsons@sparc.ecology.uga.edu).

Spring semester groups
The Counseling and Testing Center will offer eight groups during spring semester: “Women in Transition”; “Beyond Tolerance”; “Creating Closer Relationships”; “Men and Relationships”; “Better Now than Later: A Group for Couples Who Are Seriously Dating or Considering Marriage”; “Been There, Done That, and Don’t Wanna Do It No More: A Group for Couples Who Are Struggling with Co-Habitation or Marriage”; “Grief Group”; and “Feeling Good about Yourself.”
Registration is required for each group. For information, visit the center in Clark Howell Hall or check the center’s Web site (www.uga.edu/counseling).
