Faculty honored for teaching, influence on students
By Larry B. Dendy

For the first time last semester, the Student Government Association recognized teachers and advisers who have a “profound impact” on students.
Twenty-five faculty members and teaching assistants were honored by SGA for teaching excellence and for their influence on the lives of students, says Tiffany Smith, chair of the SGA Academic Affairs Committee, which sponsored a reception for the faculty members in the Tate Student Center.
“Professors perform many vital but often thankless tasks, and we believed it was time that students showed their appreciation for all the professors give on this campus,” says Smith.
SGA senators, executive committee members and committee chairs selected the faculty member who has had the most impact on their life--in or out of the classroom.
“The faculty members’ relationships with students extend beyond the classroom and help foster a strong sense of community at the university,” Smith says. “Most people had trouble selecting only one professor.”
The honored faculty members are:
Milner Ball, law; Bradley Bassler, philosophy; Bruce Britton, psychology; Charles Bullock, political science; Henry Cobb, pharmacy; Karl Espelie, entomology; Jonathan Evans, English; Frank Flanders, honor society adviser in the College of Education;
Arnold Fleischmann, political science; Tom Ganschow, history; David Gattie, biological and agricultural engineering; Carl Glickman, education; Paul Gurian, political science; Thad Hall, political science; Frank Harrison, philosophy; C. Ann Hollifield, journalism; Anthony Maltese, political science; Jeffrey Mayo, forest resources;
David Nichols, environmental design; Cherilyn Rumely, mathematics; Josue Sanchez, Spanish; Elena Sarmiento, Spanish; Fred Stephenson, marketing; Luis Valero-Elizondo, mathematics; and Elizabeth Wright, Spanish.
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, and Ann Crowther, assistant vice president for instruction, spoke at the reception.
