First Yamacraw project prof turns the complex world of computer science into a pleasurable adventure

David Gries, a pioneering researcher and author of textbooks in computer science, recently joined the computer science department at UGA , the first professor hired under a major statewide initiative called the Yamacraw Mission. The Yamacraw project is intended to attract millions of investment dollars into Georgia through support of high-tech business and industry. The plan, put together by government and business leaders, was announced a year ago, and the University System of Georgia has already hired more than 20 faculty members to help move the state toward leadership in microchip and software design.

Carl Vinson Institute of Government facilitates partnership between Athens, Ukrainian city

Because of their similarities, Athens, Ga., and Kamianets-Poldilsky, Ukraine were selected by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation to be partner cities under the Community Partnership Project managed by the foundation and funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation asked the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s International Center for Democratic Governance to facilitate the partnership through which the Athens-Clarke County unified government will help the Ukrainian city deal with some tough government and economic issues.

As director of the University Environmental Safety Division, Ken Scott has spent the past year
focusing on the much-publicized investigation and clean-up of hazardous materials buried on university-owned property. However, assisting with cleanup issues is only part of the ESD mission. Scott spoke with Columns about the role of ESD and its vision for the future.

UGARF to manage tech commercialization for
Medical College of Georgia

The UGA Research Foundation and the Medical College of Georgia Research Institute have signed a technology-transfer collaboration agreement whereby UGARF will manage technology commercialization activities on behalf of MCGRI.
“This agreement guarantees ‘one-stop shopping’ for commercialization activities at the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia,” says Lisa Kuuttila, director of the UGARF Technology Commercialization Office.



King Week 2000

The theme of this year’s week of celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is “Dream Color.” The committee planning UGA’s commemoration has developed a variety of events to remind the community of King’s dream and provide an opportunity to carry it forward.


The big chill

University’s inclement weather policy goes into effect

When winter weather threatens, faculty, staff and students should tune to Athens radio stations for the latest information regarding changes in UGA hours of operation. If a closing decision is made before regular business hours, every effort is made to inform the Athens radio stations by 6:30 a.m. If the decision is made during the day, the offices of all university vice presidents and deans are notified in addition to the broadcast stations.
