
International symposium 2000
The annual symposium sponsored by the Center for Humanities and Arts will focus on Globalization and Cultural Preservation in Latin America this year, and will take place Feb. 9-11 in Masters Auditorium of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
Approximately 20 distinguished scholars and diplomats from Latin American countries and the United States will join in discussions about indigenous perspectives, conflicts between progress and tradition, and the effect of globalization on the arts.

Total Immersion
When David Stewart got to Athens in early January, he felt somewhat like an adventurer to the New World.
It was very daunting, says the 19-year-old native of Glasgow, Scotland. Everything is a lot bigger here, but its been my lifelong ambition to come to America.
Stewart is the first student to arrive in Athens as part of a new exchange program between the University of Wales at Aberystwyth and UGA.
Colloquium on Brazil
The colloquium 500 Years of Brazil: Global and Cultural Perspectives will be held Feb. 1112 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Participants will include representatives of the artistic, governmental and academic communities of Brazil, as well as scholars from the United States. They will address the interplay between elite and popular cultures, the situation of women and ethnic and racial minorities, and recent developments in Brazilian literature and the arts. All colloquium events are open to the public.

School of Music, Classic Center bring Strauss opera to stage
Johann Strausss operetta Die Fledermaus will be performed in the Classic Center at 8 p.m. Feb. 12 and 3 p.m. Feb. 13. The production will be the second cooperative venture of the Athena Grand Opera Company--a joint venture of UGAs School of Music and the Athens Classic Center.

Terry College earns marks as high return on investment
The M.B.A. program at the universitys Terry College of Business offers a high return on investment to its students, according to a first-ever ranking by Forbes magazine.
The Terry College M.B.A. program generated the 11th-biggest return on investment among the nations top regional business schools. Wake Forest University topped the regional school list, and Harvard University was rated the No. 1 national business school.
Publication ranks ecology research fifth in nation
A new analysis of research productivity shows that UGA ranks fifth nationally in research publications for ecology, evolution and behavior.
In an article published in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America, UGA trailed, in order, only the University of California at Davis, Cornell University, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego when it comes to research published in the top 64 journals devoted to research in ecology, evolution and behavior.
