Sarah H. Moss Fellowships
Sarah H. Moss Fellowships for young UGA faculty members are available beginning in the fall of each academic year. These fellowships are for advanced study in institutions of learning abroad and in the United States. Certain restrictions apply. The purpose of these fellowships, funded through a bequest from the estate of Sarah H. Moss, is to provide young faculty members a “broad outlook and acquaintance with conditions and standards in other parts of the world.” Application materials are due in the Office of Instructional Support and Development by March 1. For information, call OISD at 542-1355 or visit the Web site (www.isd.uga.edu/facdev/fd.html).

Global discussion series
The International Student Life Office is inaugurating a Global Discussion Series this semester, a time for people to come together to discuss current events or issues from around the world. The discussion series will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the ISL lounge, located in 210 Memorial Hall. Tea and cookies will be served.

Yoga and Carolina shag
The Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities is now offering classes in yoga and Carolina shag. Beginning yoga will be held Wednesday evenings from 9 to 10:30 p.m. in 384-B Ramsey Center. Carolina shag classes are Thursday evenings, beginning at 7:40 p.m. and lasting for one hour. They will be held in 384-A Ramsey Center. Classes began the week of Feb. 7 and cost $30 for faculty and staff ($20 for students). Those registering for the dance class should arrange for a dance partner before registering. Register at the cashier’s window in the Ramsey Center lobby. For more information, call 542-5060.

The UGA Ballroom Dance Club sponsors an open-dance session on Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m. in Memorial Hall ballroom. For more information, contact Stephanie (542-2522; madsons@sparc.ecology.uga.edu) or check the Web site (www.uga.edu/bdc).

Summer field program
The 2000 Honors Geology-Anthropology Summer Field Program is now accepting applications. Students earn 14-15 semester hours of credit for the program. The group will depart from Athens June 11 and return Aug. 5.
Staff includes faculty members from UGA, three or four graduate students, a cook and a kitchen helper. Undergraduates in any major can enroll, and most of the participants are non-science majors. High school seniors who will be entering UGA this fall are also eligible. Since the field school is sponsored by the Honors Program, priority is given to students in that program, but the field school usually includes some non-Honors students.
Students carry out field investigations in a variety of geologic environments, including some hikes at high elevations. Some projects require several days of field work and written reports or maps. There are evening lectures and discussions, reading assignments and written exams.
The application fee is $25. Cost for the field school, including tuition, transportation, food and all camping and entrance fees, is $3,400. Application deadline is Feb. 29. For more information, contact Nichole Lyle at 542-0127 or Sandy Whitney at 542-3240. Information on the program is also available on the geology department Web site (www.gly.uga.edu) under the heading “field programs.”

Freshman Seminar
Faculty are invited to submit proposals for fall 2000 and spring 2001 freshman seminars, sponsored by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors Program.
The Freshman Seminar Program offers one-hour academic seminars, under the heading of FRES 1010 and 1020, designed to introduce new students to research, study and the intellectual life of the university. Freshman seminar students meet with faculty on a regular basis and learn about their interests and research. Because students will select topics that interest them, those who enroll in the program should be attentive and motivated. For some students FRES seminars may serve as an entry to the major. Now in its third year, this program has proven to be a real success among faculty as well as students.
To propose a seminar, complete the form on the Web (www.coe.uga.edu/~cemiller/proposal.htm), or send by campus mail (Freshman Seminar Program, 310F New College) or by e-mail (hruppers@franklin.uga.edu). Proposals should include a title and brief description and should indicate the preferred class period, day and semester. A list of the seminars taught during this past year is available on the Web (ben.franklin.uga.edu/dstaff/hruppers/lists.htm).
Enrollment is open to all freshman students at the university. Seminars will enroll 15 students and meet for one 50-minute session per week. Students will be graded on a Pass/Fail (FRES 1010) or traditional A-F (FRES 1020) basis and will receive one hour of academic credit towards graduation.
Faculty may teach a seminar individually or with one or more colleagues. The topic may lie within a single discipline or may cross disciplines. The college encourages “introduction-to-
the-major” seminars that will acquaint students with degree programs offered by a department.

Phi Beta Delta nominations
Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars, is accepting membership nominations until March 7 for faculty, staff and students who have made significant contributions to international education and exchange at UGA.
