The culture of honesty
www.isd.uga.edu/academic/honesty.html
The University of Georgia has put a great deal of effort into developing an effective and positive approach to the issue of academic honesty over the past few years.
Because UGA has in some ways taken the lead on this issue, the academic honesty Web site is designed to offer guidance to faculty at other institutions as well as those here.
The site offers basic definitions but also reviews the concept of “an atmosphere of integrity,” an atmosphere which depends to some extent on faculty. Specific links deal with promoting academic honesty in the classroom and what to do when cheating is suspected.
Two UGA faculty members--Ileana Arias, psychology, and Thomas Slater, religion--provide concrete examples.
Their contributions are available in video, but the site designers also have offered a text-only version for viewers whose computers lack video software.
