Advising awards
During spring semester, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will present its annual awards for excellence in academic advising to two advisers--one faculty and one professional-staff. Each of the recipients will receive a salary increase and a recognition certificate at the college awards luncheon.
The college invites nominations from undergraduate students for these awards. Any Arts and Sciences professional-staff or faculty adviser involved in academic advising of undergraduates may be nominated.
Nomination forms are available in 106 New College; hand-written nominations are also acceptable. Nominations should include the nominee’s name and department, designation as faculty or professional-staff, and supporting reasons, along with the nominator’s name, address and telephone number.
The deadline for submitting nominations is Feb. 29. Send nominations to Outstanding Academic Advisor Award, College of Arts and Sciences, 212 New College.

Lab inspections
Lab inspections for Boyd Graduate Studies, CAIS, CCRC, ecology and the ecology annex began Feb. 15. Lab operators in these buildings should make sure that labs are accessible to inspectors throughout the work day. If the lab will be unoccupied, even for a short time, keys should be available in the departmental office. For more information, call 542-5801.

Creative writing program
The Maymester Writers’ Institute sponsored by the Creative Writing Program still has a limited number of openings for its spring 2000 session. Deadline for application is March 19.
There are 45 total seats, 15 each in sessions on poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. The institute is a two-week on-campus intensive writing workshop; classes will be taught by the creative writing faculty and will feature readings and lectures by members of the Athens writing community. Tuition is $800, which does not include room and board.
Those interested in the program must provide a completed application form (available outside 102 Park Hall), a recent transcript of grades and a refundable $300 application fee on or by March 19. The institute is open to anyone with present or past status in an accredited college.
Financial assistance normally available to defray costs at UGA may be applied to program costs. For more information, call 542-2659.
