College administrators’ salaries climb
According to a recently published national survey by the College and University Personnel Association, college administrators earned a median salary this year 5 percent higher than 1998 salaries. The increase was nearly twice the rate of inflation and the largest increase in nine years. CUPA’s salary survey notes this year’s figures mark the sixth straight year that administrators’ raises have outpaced inflation. The largest increases, 5.8 percent, were enjoyed by those in executive positions, including presidents of systems and of single institutions. Academic positions, such as provosts, deans and librarians, reported a 5.6 percent salary increase. The smallest increases were for jobs in external affairs and student services--both reporting raises averaging about 4 percent.

U. of Iowa fined for sewage spill
The University of Iowa recently was fined $10,000 by that state’s Department of Natural Resources for a sewage-dumping incident discovered late last year. The school allegedly released more than 84,000 gallons of raw sewage into the Iowa River, which caused fecal coliform levels to jump to 1,000 times normal levels. The spill occurred during last summer’s renovation of a campus residence hall. The plumbing contractor on the job mistakenly rerouted two sanitary lines to a storm line. DNR officials say that UI received the highest possible penalty because of the possibility for an environmental disaster.
