Public relations staff in University Communications and four other campus units won a total of 28 awards in a regional competition sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
UGA won more awards than any other school in the Southeastern district, which stretches from Virginia to Louisiana. The University of Miami had the next highest total with 16, followed by the University of Virginia with 12.
The awards were presented at the CASE District III conference held in Atlanta Feb. 20-23. UGA President Michael F. Adams was a featured speaker at the conference.
University Communications staff won five Grand Awards--the highest honor in each category--plus 10 Awards of Excellence and six Special Merit awards. Publications produced by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the School of Forest Resources and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences accounted for another three Awards of Excellence and four Special Merit awards.
For the second year in a row, Columns took the Grand Award for internal audience tabloids. Columns photographer Peter Frey and art director Jan Beckley also won awards for photography and design.
Georgia Magazine won an Award of Excellence for alumni magazines and received a total of nine other awards for writing, design, photos and illustrations. Editor Kent Hannon won both a Grand Award and an Award of Excellence in the feature-writing category for a profile of Fortune magazine editor John Huey and a cover story on UGAs four 1999 NCAA championship teams. Peter Frey won a Grand Award for a series of photos that accompanied an article about an alumnus involved in the restoration of Ellis Island.
A special insert on the UGA Century, in both Georgia Magazine and Columns, won an Award of Excellence for institutional publications.
Publications designer Miriam Bivins won a Grand Award for the UGA Freshman Field Guide, a newsletter sent by the admissions office to students accepted to UGA. She also won awards for an orientation piece and for a layout in Georgia Magazine.
An interactive computer program designed for UGAs new Alumni Club in Atlanta received a Grand Award for multimedia programs, while UGA Today (www.uga.edu/news) won an Award of Excellence for Web site design and implementation.
Another Award of Excellence was received for the photo Web site operated by the University Communications photo staff.
