Louis S. Sohn Jr., an ardent UGA supporter and alumni leader, died Feb. 23 at his home in Marietta following a lengthy illness.
A retired Marietta businessman, Sohn was a 1940 UGA graduate and was president of the University’s Alumni Society in 1989-91. He had also served as a trustee and treasurer of the UGA Foundation and had been a trustee of the Georgia Student Educational Fund.
“Louis Sohn was one of the University of Georgia’s most devoted and enthusiastic alumni,” says President Michael F. Adams. “His keen intellect, bright personality and personal charm inspired and uplifted all who knew him. The depth of his love and dedication to his alma mater was unsurpassed, and his leadership, wisdom and counsel will be sorely missed.”
David Muia, executive director of the UGA National Alumni Association, worked with Sohn on alumni activities for more than 25 years. Muia says Sohn “has been part of the heart and soul of the alumni and development programs in every possible way. He was an adviser and mentor to every alumni director and university president since his graduation, and he did it all in his own quiet but steady way, and always with good humor.”
Sohn was the only person to serve three terms as chair of UGA’s Alumni Annual Fund, helping raise more than $2.7 million in three years. He served on the Alumni Seminar Committee and was a state-at-large member of the Alumni Society’s Board of Managers before serving as president.
