Arizona student stages hoax
To acquire an extra day for a term paper, a University of Arizona student falsely reported that he was robbed at gunpoint. The 18-year-old student told police that a Hispanic man stole his wallet with a gun to his head, but a university groundskeeper found the wallet in a nearby garbage can with no contents missing. When questioned by police, the student admitted to concocting the claim to extend the due date of a term paper. Due to the seriousness of the claim, the student could face criminal charges.

UCLA law students protest
After taking over the records office at the UCLA law school for more than five hours, 16 protesters were arrested and charged with misdemeanors for failure to disperse. The outbreak was in response to California’s Proposition 209, which banned the use of race or gender in admissions decisions. The protesters, who were primarily law students, claimed that the low numbers of African Americans (two) and Latino Americans (17) in the incoming class were a direct result of Proposition 209. The takeover was designed to capture the attention of the administration. However, Law School Dean Jonathon Varat would not comply with any proposed demands. Varat was sympathetic to the arguments raised by the students, but said that he did not have the power to repeal the proposition.
