Derrick P. Alridge, assistant professor of social science education, received the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s Outstanding Writing Award for his article “Conceptualizing a du Boisian Philosophy of Education: Toward a Model for African-American Education.”
The award recognizes articles and books that have made a substantial contribution to policy and practice in teacher education.
The AACTE is a national, voluntary association of colleges and universities with undergraduate or graduate programs to prepare professional educators. The 736 AACTE member institutions graduate approximately 90 percent of the nation’s new teachers and other educators each year.

An article co-authored by Rebajo Blase and Joseph Blase, professors of educational leadership, has been selected as the outstanding paper of the 1999 volume of the Journal of Educational Administration. The article, “Implementation of Shared Governance for Instructional Improvement: Principals’ Perspectives,” was a qualitative study of principals in schools affiliated with the League of Professional Schools. The article was selected for honors by the editorial team of the journal.

Margarethe Hoenig,
professor of physiology and pharmacology and small animal medicine, was elected to a two-year term as president of the Society for Comparative Endocrinology. The SCE is an international society whose members are basic researchers as well as clinicians interested in endocrine problems that are common to human and veterinary medicine.

Clyde E. Noble, professor emeritus of psychology, has been named to the Psychology Hall of Fame at North Georgia State University. Noble was chosen by NGSU’s psychology students because of his “distinguished career” and “significant work” in experimental psychology. Previous recipients of the same honor include several presidents of the American Psychological Association and other noted members of the profession.

Fausto Sarmiento, associate director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and adjunct graduate faculty member of the Institute of Ecology, was named representative for the Americas to the Scientific Committee of the World Mountain Forum.
Part of the International Mountain Research Workshop in Grenoble, France, the forum is sponsored by the Pole European Universitaire et Scientifique, where applications from most countries were evaluated for participation in the upcoming Foro Mondiale sur la Montagne.
Sarmiento will serve as chairman of the discussion group on epistemology of mountain research and forest conservation to be held in Chambery and Grenoble in June, in preparation for the observance of the United Nations’ International Year of the Mountains in 2002.
