The 31st annual Conference on Children’s Literature, sponsored each year by the language education department in the College of Education, was held March 24-25 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The event involved more than 600 educators, authors and literature professionals. Highlights included an address from Paul Curtis, Newberry Honor winner and recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award.
Curtis is the author of Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, both works of historical fiction. Bud, Not Buddy tells the story of an African-American boy’s experiences in Flint, Mich., during the Depression. The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 begins with laugh-aloud tales of the Watson family, also of Michigan. The tone shifts when the Watsons journey to Birmingham, Ala., in the summer of 1963 and witness the bombing of the church in which four little girls died.
Other conference sessions featured storyteller-author Carmen Deedy, illustrator Lisa Desimini, Caldecott-winner Richard Egielski (Hey, Al), and Georgia Book Award winners Andrew Clements (Frindle) and Barbara Robinson (The Best School Year Ever).
In addition, the annual awards for excellence in children’s literature were presented at the conference. Georgia students in two age groups vote for the winning book from nominees selected by committees of teachers and librarians. This year’s winner of the Georgia Children’s Picture Storybook Award (for grades K-4) is No, David by David Shannon. The winner of the Georgia Children’s Book Award (for grades 4-8) is The Imp that Ate My Homework by Laurence Yep.
