Rusk Center holds conference
The world’s leading marine environmental law experts will convene at UGA’s Dean Rusk Center April 4 for an afternoon conference devoted to the law of the sea. “Governing the Global Ocean,” co-sponsored by the Rusk Center and UGA’s Environmental Ethics Certificate Program, is designated as a regional meeting of the American Society of International Law and is underwritten in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. It is open free to the public.
The conference, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on the fourth floor of Dean Rusk Hall, features presentations by three academic experts: Jon Van Dyke, law professor at the University of Hawaii, “Marine Environmental Ethics for the 21st Century” at 1 p.m; Christopher Joyner, who teaches international law in the department of government at Georgetown University, “The Southern Ocean and the Law of the Sea: Challenges for the New Millennium” at 2 p.m.; and Biliana Cicin-Sain, professor in the Graduate College of Marine Studies at the University of Delaware, “Status and Prospects for Integrated Coastal Management: A Global Perspective” at 3 p.m. Dorinda Dallmeyer, associate director of the Rusk Center, will preside over the conference and moderate a concluding roundtable discussion at 4 p.m.
“The global ocean is the largest feature on the planet and yet too often it’s ignored as we make decisions about the future, whether at the local or international level,” says Dallmeyer. “With the expert guidance of our speakers, we’ll be examining issues such as the international efforts to protect fisheries, the special circumstances of the seas around Antarctica, and the impact of international law on planning for activities along the U.S. coast, including Georgia. All of us have a stake in the outcome as we move toward better conservation of the seas in the 21st century.”

Prof wins Supreme Court case
Shackelford Professor of Law Walter Hellerstein’s record before the U.S. Supreme Court now stands at a perfect 2-0. The professor has learned that he won his most recent case, argued before the court in January, in a unanimous decision by the justices. Hellerstein, one of the nation’s foremost experts on state and local taxation, argued on behalf of the company in Hunt Wesson, Inc., v. Franchise Tax Board of California, a complex case concerning taxation of corporate interest allocations.

MBA students win $10,000 prize
A UGA team of MBA students won the 2000 InfoUSA International Business Plan Competition held in Lincoln, Neb., with their plan for commercializing a new pharmaceutical technology called the Ternary Melt System.
The Dermamax Technologies team from the Terry College of Business was awarded $10,000 for first prize, beating out nine other MBA teams, including the second-place team from the University of Texas and the third-place team from the University of Manitoba. The victory was the fourth in the past seven years for Terry MBA teams at the Nebraska competition.
By winning the Feb. 24-27 competition, Dermamax team members Joseph Wagner of Decatur, Ill., John Abernathy of Monroeville, Ala., and Pratush Gupta of Meerut, India, also earned an automatic entry to the 2000 International Challenge of Moot Corp, the season-ending business plan competition held annually in Austin, Texas. At Moot Corp, the Dermamax team will compete against 24 other teams from throughout the world including a second team, yet to be named, from the Terry College.
“Along with participating in business plan competitions, we are also moving forward with Dermamax as a real business entity,” Wagner said. “We have met with venture capitalists and a pharmaceutical firm to develop the first round of financing.”
