part of renovation of 1905 building
Meigs Hall---named for Josiah Meigs, the universitys second president and the person who convened the first classes on campus---has been renovated and restored to become the new home of the Institute of Higher Education. In addition to housing institute faculty members, the building features state-of-the-art classroom space.
West Wing and Sopranos among record 36 winners of 59th annual Peabody Awards
Two prime-time series that debuted in 1999, NBCs The West Wing and HBOs The Sopranos, and millennium offerings from ABC, ESPN and NPR are among a record 36 winners of the 59th annual George Foster Peabody Awards, considered the broadcast and cable industrys most prestigious prize.
The award winners, chosen from more than 1,200 entries of programs broadcast in 1999, were announced last week by UGAs Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, which has administered the Peabody Awards program since its inception.

get steady state budget
with 3 percent raise pool
The University System and the University of Georgia emerged from the 2000 session of the Georgia General Assembly with a steady state budget as predicted. After several consecutive years as a front-burner issue in the state budget, higher education gave way this year to new emphasis on K-12 education, health-care coverage and rural economic development.
Performing Arts Center announces fifth-season lineup
The Performing Arts Centers fifth-anniversary season will include 32 performances in seven series: Music Series I and II, Showtime, Dance Festival, Traditions, the Ramsey Concert Hall Series and the Franklin College Chamber Music Series.

The West Virginia University African Drum and Dance Ensemble, under the direction of Paschal Yao Younge, will perform Aza! A Celebration of Contemporary African Music and Dance at 7:30 p.m. April 8 in Hodgson Hall. They will be joined by UGA students and faculty from the Handdrum Ensemble, the Percussion Ensemble, the African-American Choral Ensemble, the Pamoja Dance Company and the dance department. Tickets for Aza! are free but required, and can be obtained at the box office in the Performing Arts Center.
Clothed in controversy
The controversy over the working conditions under which clothing is manufactured in underdeveloped countries has led UGA to join the Fair Labor Association. Columns spoke with Richard Mullendore, vice president for student affairs, about UGAs concerns.
