David C. Coleman, Research Professor of Ecology, received the Award for Excellence in Ecosystem Science from Colorado State University’s Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory.
Coleman was honored for his pioneering studies in the “below-ground” system--plant roots, microbes, soil fauna and soil physical properties. Coleman is the second recipient of this award, the only one given for achievements in ecosystem science. The award was presented March 13 in conjunction with the meeting at Colorado State of the NREL external advisory committee.
Coleman has served as editor of several scientific journals and as adviser to federal entities, including the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Science, the Department of Defense, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Agriculture.

Ron Hendrick, associate professor of forest ecology, received the Junior Faculty Award from Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of science. Competition for the annual award, which recognizes distinguished research accomplishment, is open to faculty in agriculture, food and consumer sciences, environmental design, forestry and veterinary medicine.
Hendrick was recognized as an international scholar and innovator of new techniques in the study and understanding of plant and tree roots. He pioneered the use of tiny video cameras buried inside long tubes, called mini-rhizotrons, to study the birth, growth and death of roots without disturbing them in the process. He also developed an analytical framework, new computer hardware and a software program called Roots to interpret the data gathered from the videotapes.
Hendrick also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Forest Research and was recently selected to serve as a panelist on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Research Competitive Grants Program for Ecosystem Science.

Donald Nute, professor of philosophy and director of the Artificial Intelligence Center, was elected by the Society for Exact Philosophy to serve for the next two years as its president.
The SEP promotes the use of formal methods in philosophical research. Its annual meeting alternates between the United States and Canada, and most of its members are at institutions in these two countries. UGA hosted the annual SEP meeting in 1986 and 1998.

Tom Rodgers, associate vice president for public service and outreach, was part of a team that led a regional trade and humanitarian mission in this month to Nicaragua and Honduras, two countries struggling to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Team members--from every Southern state and Puerto Rico--included representatives of service industries, university and local leaders, and officials from Southern state departments of commerce, state, health and transportation.
Under the auspices of the Southern Growth Policies Board, the trade mission 1) identified business opportunities for Southern service industries; 2) explored possible linkages between Southern and Central American cities and U.S. institutions of higher education to increase student and faculty exchange, technical assistance and cultural understanding; and 3) provided aid, such as donations of medical equipment.

Kudos recognizes special contributions staff, faculty and administrators are making in teaching, research and service.
