Three finalists have been chosen for the position of senior vice president for finance and administration at the University of Georgia.
The finalists are:
• John L. Finan, vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer at the University of South Carolina;
• Henry M. Huckaby, director of UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government; and
• Katherine M. Johnston, associate vice president and chief financial officer for health sciences at the University of Minnesota.
The new vice president will succeed Allan Barber, who will retire June 30 after 34 years at UGA, including 29 years as the institution’s top financial officer.
The finalists were chosen by a search committee chaired by P. George Benson, dean of the Terry College of Business. Benson says the committee received 64 applications and nominations for the position.
“This was an extremely strong pool of candidates,” he says. “We received applications from outstanding people throughout the country, in academia as well as the private sector, which indicates the high level of interest in this position. Each of these candidates is well-qualified to assume the important responsibilities Allan has handled so superbly.”
Finan oversees a $580 million budget at the University of South Carolina and is responsible for the bursar, controller and grants-accounting offices, as well as offices that handle security, parking, publishing and printing, the motor pool, facilities management, procurement and food service.
He previously was director of management, budget and planning for the Montgomery County school system. A former U.S. Air Force officer with the rank of brigadier general, he served as chief financial officer for the Air Force’s budget management, operating and payroll accounts. He was also chief financial officer and comptroller for the Military Airlift Command, and was executive assistant to the assistant secretary of defense.
Finan holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Connecticut and an M.B.A. from Michigan State University.
Huckaby, who became director of the Institute of Government in 1997, worked for more than 20 years in Georgia state government, in such positions as director of the Office of Planning and Budget, executive director of the Georgia Housing and Finance Authority and commissioner of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. He was director of the fiscal research program at Georgia State University for two years before joining UGA.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and an M.B.A. in international business from Georgia State University, and is working on a doctorate in public administration at UGA.
Johnson oversees the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center, a group of professional schools in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and public health, with a budget of more than $600 million.
Before coming to Minnesota, Johnson was at Virginia Tech where she served as director of budget and financial planning, budget director, and assistant to the vice president for finance.
Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in education from Emporia State University and an M.B.A. from Virginia Tech.
