More than 80 UGA staff--representing units across campus and all employee classifications--gathered April 13 to offer candid views on ways the university can improve over the next decade.
The meeting, convened by Vice President for Strategic Planning Don Eastman and Associate Vice President for Human Resources Loretta Harper, was the latest in a series of similar sessions held throughout this academic year to solicit input from various constituencies into the strategic--planning process.
University Council will consider plan to create New Media Institute
A proposal to create a New Media Institute at the university, and to offer an interdisciplinary certificate in new media studies and a masters degree in Internet technology, will come before the University Council at its meeting April 27.

Going out with a bang
When low-mass stars called red supergiants die, they fade away on a wimpy wind--or so scientists have thought. New research suggests that the opposite may be true. These stars, in fact, may die with a bang and not with a whimper.
The study, published this month in Science, may lead researchers to a new understanding of red supergiants, which are studied to resolve issues in nucleosynthesis, stellar structure and the evolution of stars.

National search for institutional diversity administrator under way
The university will begin to seek candidates for a new senior administrative position that has been created to foster diversity and increase recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty.
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has appointed a committee to conduct a national search to fill the position of associate provost for institutional diversity. Tom Dyer, acting vice president for instruction, will be chair of the committee, which includes three students and two staff members along with nine other faculty members.
Gustavson named
associate dean at Terry College
Sandra G. Gustavson, who for 14 years has headed the department of insurance, legal studies and real estate, has been named associate dean for faculty and research in the Terry College of Business, Dean P. George Benson has announced.
Wind Symphony
The UGA Wind Symphony will premiere two new works commissioned by the Department of University Bands during a concert April 25 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall. The concert is offered in conjunction with this years recording sessions for the ensembles newest CD recording.
