Larry Weatherford, vice president for government relations, to retire
By Larry B. Dendy

Larry Weatherford, UGA’s vice president for government relations, has announced his intention to retire Dec. 1.
Weatherford, who has been at UGA since 1988, became vice president when UGA President Michael Adams created the position as part of his administrative reorganization in 1998. Weatherford previously had been director of government relations and had held several other positions in the division of external relations.
“Larry Weatherford has been extremely effective in representing the university’s interests at the local, state and federal governmental levels,” Adams says. “He is widely known and universally respected by political and government officials throughout Georgia and in Washington, and that has translated into immense benefits for the University of Georgia.”
Adams says a process is under way to select a successor, who probably will be named this summer. He says Weatherford will remain in a consulting role after a new vice president is chosen.
The selection process will be managed by Tom Landrum, executive assistant to Adams, and will be conducted by a committee composed of UGA’s three senior vice presidents and the chair of the University Council Executive Committee. Landrum says the committee will give Adams a list of several qualified candidates from which to select a new vice president.
Prior to joining UGA, Weatherford worked 34 years in administrative positions with the Georgia Department of Labor in Atlanta and the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington. He was deputy assistant secretary of labor for employment and training under President Jimmy Carter. From 1980 until joining UGA, he was regional administrator in the federal labor department’s southeastern office, implementing decentralization of federal labor programs.
