Utility construction forces closing of streets, parking lots
Scheduled underground-utility construction to support the infrastructure of the new student learning center will necessitate closing several parking lots and re-routing traffic in and around Sanford Stadium, the University Bookstore and the Tate Student Center, according to UGA’s Physical Plant.
The parking lot at the bookstore has already been permanently closed, as that is the site of the student learning center. The parking lot adjacent to the Fine Arts Building will remain open through May, although space will be limited by the construction. It will close permanently in June, with only a few spaces available for the physically disabled.
Additional underground-utility work required re-routing traffic along East Campus Road from the Field Street intersection to the intersection on Hooper Street. East Campus Road will be reduced to one lane from three during the daytime, with flagmen controlling traffic in either direction. The road will open up to two lanes after 5 p.m each workday. Construction crews will keep bus and automobile traffic moving through the detours.
River Road will also be closed for southbound traffic during the day.
