Remembering those we’ve lost
At sunset on May 1, the last day of classes for the academic year, the university community came together outside the Chapel in remembrance of the 28 students, faculty and staff who had died since the previous May. The chapel bell tolled as each name was read and members of the Arch Society lit a candle for each loss (above). Then the students moved into the audience, distributing and lighting more candles. Music was provided by the UGA Woodwind Ensemble.
Included in the 28 deaths were 18 students, six of whom had been lost to a variety of unrelated causes in March, shocking the community and leading to the memorial service, which was organized by the Office of Student Affairs. The staff members were Judith Fitzgerald Brooks, Forest Resources; Paul K. Hopkins, Bolton Cafeteria; Bessie McKinley, Housing; Charles Rivers, Georgia Experiment Station; and Pascal L. Watson Jr., Athletic Association. Faculty were Robert D. Hart, international agriculture; Alan J. Jaworski, botany; Stanley W. Lindberg, Georgia Review; Lois K. Miller, entomology and genetics; and David M. Randolph, music.
The total rose to 29 on the following day, with the fatal heart attack suffered by telecommunications professor Barry Sherman, director of the Peabody Awards program. A memorial service for Sherman was held May 5 in Hodgson Hall. Photo by Peter Frey.
