Book examines noteworthy speeches

Representative American Speeches examines some of the more noteworthy public statements made about key American issues from 1998 to 1999. It is edited by Calvin Logue, UGA professor of speech communication, and Jean DeHart, assistant professor of communication arts at Appalachian State University.
The first section looks at the various ways in which democracy can be preserved in the next century and the problems that the country must overcome in order to thrive in the future. The second section examines how the United States relates to other nations and highlights the steps needed to keep international policies running smoothly. In the third section, the issue of human rights is explored, including the related subject of what has become known as “hate crimes.” For the fourth section, the more abstract topic of human morals is investigated.
The fifth section looks at religious faith; specifically, the speeches present views on the Christian, Catholic and Muslim faiths and also provide a general analysis of spirituality. Finally, in section six, the subject of communication, education and the arts in America is examined
