A committee of faculty and staff members has begun the search for a new associate vice president for human resources.
The committee will recommend a successor to Loretta F. Harper, who is leaving UGA Oct. 1 to become vice president for human resources at the University of Utah.
Henry Huckaby, senior vice president for finance and administration, has appointed Peter Shedd, associate vice president for instruction, as chair of the nine-member search committee.
Other committee members are Gene Austin, manager of the operations and maintenance department in the physical plant; Sarah Fraker, program specialist in the Terry College of Business computer center and president of Staff Council; Peggy Herrmann, senior public service associate in the Carl Vinson Institute of Government; Ed Kellough, associate professor of political science; Merryll Penson, librarian in the main library; Ken Scott, director of environmental safety; Steve Shewmaker, executive director of legal affairs; and Victor Wilson, associate vice president for student affairs.
The associate vice president for human resources oversees all human resources programs and services for UGAs 9,300 faculty and staff members and 3,000 retired personnel. The division includes employee benefits, employee relations, employment and employee data management services, organizational design and compensation, and training and development.
The committee will be seeking a person who not only has extensive experience in human resources and personnel matters, but also someone who can effectively relate to and communicate with university employees at all levels, Shedd says. We will try to find someone who will follow the excellent standards Loretta Harper has set for this position.
Shedd says he hopes to have the position filled by Nov. 1.
