Georgia’s newest U.S. senator, Zell Miller, was among members of the state’s congressional delegation who attended a July 26 reception jointly sponsored by the University of Georgia, Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Washington, D.C.
Co-chaired by the presidents of the three institutions--Michael F. Adams, William M. Chace and Wayne Clough--the event was set up to express appreciation to the delegation for their support for federally funded research being conducted at the three institutions, particularly in the sciences, agriculture and engineering.
Members of the Georgia delegation and their staffs, plus senior administrators and key area alumni of the three institutions also attended the reception. Miller’s trip to Washington came one day after his appointment by Gov. Roy Barnes to fill the vacancy created by the death of Republican Sen. Paul Coverdell. He was sworn in the day after the reception.
In assuming the senate seat, Miller has had to resign his faculty position at UGA, where he was a Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and the holder of the Philip H. Alston Jr. chair.
Of Miller’s appointment, President Adams said, “We wish him well and are certain that the state of Georgia and its flagship university will benefit from his leadership in Washington as we have from his leadership in Athens and Atlanta.”
UGA, Emory and Georgia Tech are members of the Science Coalition, an alliance of public and private universities and other organizations, whose mission is to sustain the federal government’s historic commitment to university-based science research.
The coalition sponsored Science Day 2000, a lobbying event on Capitol Hill earlier in July.
