FSU changes founding date
The president of Florida State University has reportedly changed the institution’s official founding date from 1857 to 1851. The earlier date represents the year Florida lawmakers authorized the establishment of two seminaries in the state. Two existing seminaries offered their lands to establish what would become the University of Florida in 1853 and FSU in 1857. Florida State’s new founding date makes the school two years older than Florida--which has long claimed to be the state’s oldest institution of higher education--and adds proverbial fuel to the fire burning under this heated cross-state rivalry.

Stanford bans ads in sporting events
Stanford University has removed all commercial advertisements from its football stadium and basketball arena because of concerns over the commercialization of college sports. The practice generated revenue for the athletics department for 20 years, but university president Gerhard Casper raised concerns that college athletics is becoming “part of the vast entertainment industry.” The ban will not extend to team uniforms that display corporate logos.
