Campus construction projects enhance pedestrian safety

Students have returned to campus to find a number of construction projects under way, all designed to enhance pedestrian safety.
UGA completed several such projects last year at a cost of almost $1.7 million. More than half a million dollars was spent on projects on East Campus, including sidewalks around the University Health Service, the Ramsey Student Center, Four Towers and the animal sciences building.
Sidewalks designed to direct students safely across College Station Road to the intramural fields have also been added.
Three lighted crosswalk systems have been installed on the East Campus loop. They are identical to the two systems installed last year on Lumpkin Street. Each lighting system cost nearly $20,000; labor for the installation was donated by the Athens-Clarke County public works department.
UGA has also installed jogging and bike trails on East Campus Road and improved sidewalks, lighting and bus bays on both Jackson and Baxter streets. Sidewalks have been widened and recessed from the streets, and landscaping along those sidewalks has been designed to direct pedestrians to crosswalks and discourage jaywalking.
Pedestrian safety projects currently under construction include additional work on Baxter Street and the College Station Road gateway. Utility work in downtown Athens, particularly along Broad Street, will ultimately improve safety around campus.
UGA kicks off the annual celebration of Pedestrian Safety Week Aug. 21. For additional information, contact Mike Stover in the university’s Environmental Safety Division (mstover@esd.uga.edu).
