The Performing Arts Division of the University Union has announced the 10th-anniversary season of the Forte performing arts series. Organized by student members of University Union, Forte provides fine arts entertainment at affordable prices to students and the university community.
The series starts off with a modern-dance group, the Bebe Miller Company. Millers company aims for a physical language for the human condition, using theatrical narrative, performance and movement. They will be performing two works in multiple parts, Verge and Rhythm Studies. This program will end the companys half-week residency working with UGA dance students and performing for children in the Athens community. The show will begin at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Fine Arts Theatre. Individual tickets are $12-$14 ($6-$8 students).
Keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin will return to Athens Nov. 14 for the second Forte presentation, Medeski Martin and Wood. The ensembles style is a blend of funk, hip hop, blues, rock and avant garde, influenced by jazz greats Duke Ellington, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra and musicians from Brazil and Cuba. The show will start at 8 p.m. in the Classic Center Theater. Individual tickets are $16-$20 ($8-$12 students).
On Jan. 23, pianist George Winston will perform. Winstons unique impressionistic style combines rural folk piano with the pop influence of Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson and the rhythm and blues of Henry Butler and James Booker. The show will be at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall. Individual tickets are $18-$20 ($8-$10 students).
Writer, actor and performer Spalding Gray returns to the Forte series Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall. Gray has appeared in several movies, but is especially known for his monologues, such as Monster in a Box and the Obie Award-winner Swimming to Cambodia. He will perform his new monologue, Morning Noon and Night. Tickets are $12-$14 ($6-$8 students).
Wrapping up the Forte season on April 9 is the new Aeros gymnastic-theater production. World-renowned choreographers Daniel Ezralow, David Parsons and Moses Pendleton, with Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, creators of the percussion-theatre sensation Stomp, have joined forces with the Romanian Gymnastics Federation to create a soaring evening of entertainment. Aeros erases the line between dance and sport. The show will begin at 8 p.m. at the Classic Center Theater. Tickets are $12-$18 ($6-$10 students).
Tickets for the full series are $52-$70 ($28-$40 for students), depending on seat location. A pick-three option is $30-$42 ($20-$25 for students).
Season tickets and the pick-three option are now available at the Tate Student Center cashiers window, open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (542-8074). Tickets to single performances will be available beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 8.
