Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox, who graduated summa cum laude from UGA in 1980, addressed the new degree recipients at Commencement Aug. 14. She urged her audience to get involved in the political process.

“Here is what I really want you graduates today to do: Change the world.
“And here’s how I want you to do it: Through the political process.
“Politics is not a dirty word. Politics is the process that we go through to get our government to work for us. . . . Our political system is a very good system if we elect good leaders to lead it. . . . I want you to think about running for political office. . . .
“Our government needs you. We need a new infusion of leaders in Georgia who can do things in a new way. . . . We need leaders like you, who know what technology means, who are willing to clean up our rivers and streams, who understand the need for mass transit, who really believe in diversity.
“The changes a new breed of leaders can bring to Georgia are unlimited. . . . To tackle the issues of the 21st century we need a better class of leaders--we need you. Be the leaders who make the world as you want it to be. Make Georgia the place you’ll always be proud to call home.”
