UGA Partners receive briefings on strategic, physical master plans

More than 70 members of the UGA Partners Program met Aug. 21 for a campus tour, briefings on the strategic plan and the physical master plan, and lunch in the administration building. The group included a number of current and retired faculty, staff and administrators, along with alumni from Athens and Atlanta.
They heard Don Eastman, vice president for strategic planning, discuss what’s happened at UGA since 1990 and what he sees on the horizon for the next 10 years: changes brought about by technology, the revolution in biology, and “the globalization of everything.”
Danny Sniff of the University Architects office talked about projects that have transformed Jackson Street and Herty Field and future plans for Sanford and D.W. Brooks drives. An overall goal, he said, is to make the campus more pedestrian-friendly.
Ryan Lynch, a senior marketing major, also spoke to the group about his experiences as an orientation leader for new students. “One of the things we try to get across,” he said, “is that with a big school like UGA come lots of opportunities.”
UGA Partners help support opportunities for students and provide special funding for university programs. Employees can become Partners with a contribution of at least $1,500 annually, with $500 of the total earmarked for the President’s Venture Fund. Other donors are asked to contribute at least $2,500, with $1,000 to the venture fund.
At the close of the fiscal year, UGA Partners had contributed a total of $2.8 million to various funds in the UGA Foundation, according to Jill Bateman, who coordinates the program in the development office. “Currently, 160 Partners have made their commitment for 2000, and 35 of those are new members,” she says. “We’re working toward a goal of 400 members by the end of the calendar year.”
Upcoming Partners events include the Presidents Club reception on Sept. 1, a reception before the Vanderbilt game in October, and the Partners Gala Feb.8. A tour to Tuscany in May is being planned as a special Partners event.
