Robert G. Edge, a partner at the Atlanta law firm of Alston and Bird who graduated summa cum laude from UGA in 1960 and went on to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, delivered the Convocation address earlier this month. Some highlights:
“Instead of talking with you about essentials, especially what will go on in your classes, I want to talk about some extras. Instead of encouraging you to stay focused on your courses, which you already know you need to do, I will urge you to take some minor detours. . . . You have come to a place that is like a giant smorgasbord that offers countless wonderful dishes to choose from. Don’t merely stick to familiar choices and get to the end of the line here in Athens without sampling as many new intellectual, cultural and recreational dishes outside the classroom
as you can. Sampling new things is simply one of the most valuable parts of a rich college experience. . . .
“Sometime soon find an hour to . . . check out the exhibitions at the Georgia Museum of Art. . . .
“The calendar announces lectures by our own distinguished professors, as well as other international scholars, important political figures and a miscellany of interesting people who affect the world we live in. Make time on your calendar to find out what some of these people have to say. And don’t restrict yourself only to those speakers who will talk about things you already know about or agree with. . . .”
