A new associate vice president for student affairs has been chosen at the university, and a new director of judicial programs has been appointed.
Richard Mullendore, vice president for student affairs, announced that Thomas H. Burke has become associate vice president for student affairs. Burke, who was most recently assistant vice president and dean of student life at Middle Tennessee State University, fills the position formerly held by William Porter, who left UGA earlier this year for another job.
Mullendore also announced that Owen W. Barker Jr. has become director of judicial programs. A former police officer in Charleston, S.C., with about 10 years experience in student affairs work, Barker fills the position left vacant by the retirement of William Bracewell.
Burke oversees a number of departments and programs in student affairs, including student financial aid, the University Health Center, University Housing, the Counseling and Testing Center, disability services and student information systems.
Burke helped lead several initiatives in the areas of housing and facilities at MTSU, including construction of new student apartments and a Greek Row, and a major expansion of the schools recreation center.
He was part of a group that developed a $90 million campus housing renovation plan and was co-chair of a task force to build a new student union.
Burke received a bachelors degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and masters and doctoral degrees in education from Florida State University.
Barker will manage the UGA office that handles student misconduct cases. The office processes conduct infraction complaints, holds judicial hearings and coordinates appeals, maintains student disciplinary records, and recruits, trains and advises members of the student judiciary and Defender-Advocate Society.
Before joining the Charleston police force last year, Barker was director of student activities at Washington and Lee University. He has also worked at the College of Charleston as associate director of student life for Greek life and leadership development, and at Sue Bennett College in London, Ky., where he was director of student affairs and athletic director.
Barker received a bachelors degree in history from Presbyterian College and earned a masters degree in counseling from Eastern Kentucky University.
