Danae Roberts is a political science major who graduated from UGA in May 2000 and in July won a primary to become the newest representative from Columbus to the Georgia General Assembly. She is also the youngest person ever elected to the state legislature. Roberts returned to campus Aug. 21 to speak to a marketing class. Some excerpts:
“This summer I marketed myself. My campaign was totally grassroots-oriented. I established a relationship with my constituents by going door-to-door. . . .
“The qualifying age to run for office is 21. I was nervous about my age, since I was 22 running against a 48-year-old man who was the incumbent. What I learned was it’s important to stay positive even when you think something is a detriment. I realized that I had valuable experience serving in other campaigns. . . .
“I want to assure you people are noticing Generation X can make a difference. . . . We’re all created uniquely for different areas of service. Show others, lead others, challenge yourself. Stay focused on your goal and work hard, and nine times out of 10 you’ll achieve it.”
