| Scooters banned from BYU Brigham Young University officials recently adopted a policy prohibiting students from using aero-scooters on campus. Scooters, which look like skateboards with handlebars, will be classified with rollerskates, in-line skates and skateboards. University police say that scooters have damaged campus facilities. Use of scooters may result in a $25 fine. Students protesting the policy contend that scooters should be subject to the rules and regulations pertaining to bicycles. Survey: Diversity is valuable A recent survey for the Business of Higher Education Forum, a partnership between the American Council on Education and the National Alliance of Business, found that nearly 90 percent of Americans believe racial and ethnic diversity on the nations college campuses to be important. A smaller percentage, however--75 percent--believed that schools should be allowed to take actions to ensure that their student body is diverse. Only 24 percent of the respondents were strongly in favor of affirmative-action programs in college admissions. However, a higher percentage--48 percent--favored affirmative-action programs in the workplace. |
