Center of the univers(ity)
UGA’s new Student Learning Center (at right) will be such a significant presence at the center of campus--covering 200,000 square feet--that breaking ground for it required 11 shovels (above). Construction is now under way and completion is projected for 2003, at a cost of $43 million. The building will contain 25 classrooms of varying sizes, with 2,200 classroom seats. In addition, an electronic teaching library will seat 2,400 in groupings of various sizes, with 500 public-access computers and additional connections for personal laptop computers. Group-study rooms will make collaborative projects less at risk of disrupting other library users. There will be numerous information desks, and even a coffee house.
