MARCIE CLAAS
Conference Facilitator
Career Services Center

TIME IN CURRENT POSITION:
A year and a half.

JOB DESCRIPTION: “My primary responsibility is planning the five career fairs that we host each year. This includes working with the employer participants, managing the logistical aspects of the events and most importantly spreading the word about the events to the students, alumni, faculty and staff. I have had the opportunity to grow with our career fairs in the past year. This year will be the second year that three of our career fairs will be taking place at the Classic Center in downtown Athens. This location has provided a very professional atmosphere along with the opportunity to host many more employers in a one-day event.”

MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB:
“Seeing the events unfold is very rewarding. It is great to see everything come together. Meeting the employers whom I have been working with in the months prior to the events and seeing the students’ anticipation and excitement is lots of fun. It is very encouraging to speak to students after the events and to see their satisfaction because they know that their hard work and preparation are going to pay off.”

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: “Spreading the word not only about the career fairs, but about all of our services and programs is a challenge that we face.
“The staff in our office is very dedicated to helping students prepare for their careers. We offer programs for all students, freshmen through seniors, and it is a challenge to make students and faculty aware of our activities and to let them know how they (the students) can benefit from those activities.”

THE PERSON I MOST ADMIRE: “I truly admire my grandfather. He has always encouraged me to work hard and maintain a positive attitude.
“Since graduating from college and joining the workforce, I have found that a positive attitude is essential.
“Work takes up much more time in our lives than does family. This fact alone can be very frustrating. I think it is important to focus on the positive and make the best of every situation.”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS:
“I enjoy drying and pressing flowers, working in my garden and spending time with my husband, Eric.”

A BOOK I’D RECOMMEND TO OTHERS:
Left Behind, a series of novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins that chronicles the end of the world.”

THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD: “It seems like our country’s focus has shifted away from nurturing the welfare of our families and rewarding hard work.
“ This concerns me because I don’t know what our world will look like in 20 years when today’s children are adults.”
