New administrators for the Digital Library of Georgia and the Media Archives and Peabody Awards Program have been appointed at the Libraries.
An archivist, Ruta Abolins has been acting director of the Media Archives for several months, succeeding Linda Tadic, who has joined the Getty Museum. Her appointment was effective July 15.
Stephen Miller, formerly of the Rare Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library at Duke University, has been named director of the Digital Library. His appointment was effective Aug. 3. He succeeds Bob Henneberger, who recently retired after spearheading UGAs digitization efforts while also serving as director of the Georgia Newspaper Project.
The Media Archives is one of the largest broadcasting archives in the country and includes more than 90,000 television and radio programs, 5 million feet of newsfilm, folk music field tapes and home movies. The Peabody Awards Collection is the keystone of the collection, containing virtually every entry submitted for this prestigious award, and constitutes one of the foremost and most diverse sound and moving images collections in the world.
Abolins joined the UGA Libraries in July 1998. She is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, a professional organization dedicated to the education and sharing of information on preservation, cataloging and management of moving image collections.
With nine years of experience in reference, cataloging, appraisal and management of film and television collections, Abolins has extensive research skills and knowledge of film and television history. Prior to joining the UGA Libraries, Abolins was a film archivist with the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research for eight years. She holds masters degrees in library and information studies, from the University of Wisconsin, and in popular culture, from Bowling Green State University. She holds a bachelors of fine arts from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
The Digital Library of Georgia is a collection of digitized books, images, manuscripts and media with the emphasis on material important to the history and culture of the state of Georgia. The Digital Library is part of GALILEO, Georgias statewide electronic library. Miller will organize digitization projects for GALILEO libraries, including University System institutions and archive collections throughout the state of Georgia, as well as leading digitization efforts for University Libraries.
While at Duke, Miller managed a collaborative encoded archival description project involving Duke, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and the North Carolina State Archives. Prior to his involvement with that project, he managed two digital imaging projects: the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition Historic American Sheet Music Project and the William Gedney Photographs and Writings project.
Miller holds a masters of library science and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Kentucky. |
