UGA will be well represented at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia: 20 former or current students, representing eight countries, will be competing, and swim coach Jack Bauerle is one of the assistant coaches for the U.S. team.
Leading the way will be Teresa Edwards, who played basketball for Georgia from 1983 until 1986. This will be her fifth appearance on the U.S. Olympics basketball team. She already has three gold medals and a bronze, and has an Olympic career scoring average of nine points.
Also back for his fifth Olympics will be Robert Dover in the dressage competition.
The UGA swimming program produced 10 competing swimmers, representing five countries. In addition, former swimmer Sheila Taormina, who won a gold medal at the 1996 Games as a member of the U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay team, will compete in the triathlon this year (cycling, swimming and running).
In all, seven athletes from UGA will be competing in track and field, including Debbie Ferguson, who won a silver medal in 1996 as a member of the Bahamas 400-meter relay team.
