New group hosts first Parents and Families Weekend
Parents and family members of current UGA undergraduates have been invited to campus for a special Parents and Families Weekend Sept. 15 and 16. The weekend is the first major event sponsored by the new UGA Parents and Families Association, organized by UGA Foundation trustees Peter Amann and Read Morton and coordinated by Tammy Gilland, a staff member in the Division of External Affairs.
While on campus, parents and family members will hear lectures by selected UGA faculty, enjoy an ice cream social with deans of the various schools and colleges, and hear presentations on such topics as the current job market, student credit card debt and learning outside the classroom.
“The purpose of the program is to allow parents to be more involved in their children’s education,” says Amann, an executive with Merrill Lynch in Atlanta.
The agenda includes a welcome reception on North Campus starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, a workout and continental breakfast at the Ramsey Student Center Saturday morning and a picnic lunch scheduled at noon on North Campus. For additional information, contact Gilland at 542-8180.

Lawsuit settlements reached, with appeal under way
Lawyers representing the University System of Georgia have reached a settlement with attorney Lee Parks regarding several plaintiffs suing for admission to the University of Georgia. The settlement offers admission to eight plaintiffs, who claim they suffered reverse discrimination in the university’s admissions process. In addition to granting admission and monetary awards to cover the difference spent to attend schools other than UGA, the university said it is not awarding and will not award any scholarships to undergraduates in which race is a qualifying factor.
“This settlement resolves the remaining undergraduate admissions cases pending in U.S. District Court, thereby saving unnecessary legal expenses and allowing us to focus our attention on the appeal,” UGA spokesman Tom Jackson said. Through the board of regents, the university is appealing a July decision by federal Judge B. Avant Edenfield, in the case of Johnson vs. Board of Regents. The judge ruled the use of enthnicity as one of several factors used in a small percentage of admissions decisions is unconstitutional.

UGA suspends sorority
University administrators placed Alpha Gamma Delta sorority on interim suspension Sept. 6 pending further investigation into an allegation of racial discrimination in its recruitment process for fall semester.
Vice President for Student Affairs Richard Mullendore said the action comes as a result of a preliminary investigation into allegations made by a member of the sorority that an African-American student was denied admission to the sorority on the basis of her race.
“The member making the allegations provided specific information regarding comments made in a chapter meeting and elsewhere about the candidate’s race and the effect her membership would have on the sorority,” Mullendore said. “She also made allegations of retaliation against her for lodging the complaint.”
“Discrimination is wrong and will not be tolerated at the University of Georgia,” President Michael F. Adams said. “I condemn discrimination personally, and I condemn it as president of this institution. Based on the allegation and the early investigation as reported to me, it appears this sorority has acted wrongly in both motive and result.”
Representatives of the Alpha Gamma Delta national organization are conducting their own investigation and also have the option of issuing sanctions.
