Carol Churchills Top Girls opens University Theatre season |
British playwright Carol Churchill has gained wide acclaim for her imaginative dramatic structure and use of double-casting in her well-known plays Vinegar Tom (1976) and Cloud Nine (1978). Churchills Top Girls (1982), the first production of this years University Theatre season, tells the story of Marlene, a successful go-getter and supporter of 1980s Thatcherism.
To celebrate her big promotion Marlene invites top girls from the distant past to a dinner party. As the party deteriorates into a drunken gathering of misfits, parallels are drawn between the heroines of history and the lives of the real women in Marlenes life. What sacrifices have these women had to make in order to be successful in a mans world? Was it worth it? Churchills ingenious language critiques not only feminist progress but also 1980s capitalism.
The University Theatre production will be directed by doctoral student Brian Haimbach, who also directed last seasons Before the Fire. Drama professor Sylvia Pannell will design costumes and M.F.A. design student Kate Jones will design the set. The company, composed of graduate and undergraduate actors, will employ contrasting acting styles to highlight the political overtones of the play.
Top Girls is part of University Theatres Off Broad Street series. Last season every performance of that series was completely sold out. In order to accommodate audience demand, Saturday matinee performances have been added.
Top Girls will be presented in the Cellar Theatre, located on the ground floor of the Fine Arts Building, at 8 p.m. Sept. 13-16 and at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 16-17. Tickets are $10 for regular admission and $8 for students and are available at the box office in the Fine Arts lobby. Box office hours are noon-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. During those hours, the box office can be reached at 542-2838. If tickets are still available, they may also be purchased one hour prior to showtime at the Cellar Theatre. |
