Ground was broken for UGAs new Student Learning Center on Sept. 1 in a multishovel ceremony that demonstrated the complexity and sophistication of the new building. Several participants addressed the audience briefly:
Michael F. Adams, president: This building will serve as a literal and symbolic heart of the university. . . . It is the largest project dollar-wise in the history of the University of Georgia. . . . It is the threshold of the 21st-century learning environment, . . . designed with this new-age student in mind. . . . Its not the size and cost of the building that make it significant--it reflects the way students will learn in 2004.
Karen Holbrook, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost: This building exemplifies the state of higher education. The emphasis is on learning rather than teaching; it is recognized that the student plays an important role in her education. . . . This building also exemplifies the value of technology in education. Technology is only, however, a means to an end. . . . Many students arrive at college with the ability to collect vast amounts of information but without the skill to analyze and synthesize. That is what we are here for.
William Potter, university librarian: This building will operate as a collaborative endeavor--among the library, University Computing and Networking Services, and the Office of Instructional Support and Development--to support students and faculty. . . . For the students of the future, it will be a focal point of their collegiate lives. |
