Two committees of faculty, staff, students and outside practitioners have begun searches for new directors at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership.
We are looking for two individuals with a true passion for their areas of expertise; a distinguished record of administering a university program, agency or organization; and a firm belief in public service and outreach through collaboration, says Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach and associate provost.
Sharon Nickols, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, is chairing the Vinson Institute search committee.
Others serving on the committee include Allan Adams, Business Outreach Services/Small Business Development Center; Ann Crowther, academic affairs; Dick Field, Georgia Center for Continuing Education; Vivian Fisher, Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach; Tom Gaines, Vinson Institute; Paul Hardy, Vinson Institute; Ed Kellough, political science; Rosalind Mays, Vinson Institute; Leonard Myers, Vinson Institute; Martha McDaniel, Spalding County Board of Commissioners and Association County Commissioners of Georgia; and Evelyn Turner-Pugh, Georgia Municipal Association and Columbus-Muscogee City Council.
The committee is searching for a successor to Hank Huckaby, who became UGAs senior vice president for finance and administration July 1 this year. Mike Swanson is serving as interim director of the institute.
The director oversees the interdisciplinary work of the institute, which plans and conducts programs of in-service training, applied policy research, and direct technical assistance to Georgia officials in state and local government and developing foreign democracies.
The 12-member search committee for the director of the Fanning Institute will be chaired by Grover Andrews, interim director of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Also on the committee are Janine Bethel, Vinson Institute; Jamie Clark, Fanning Institute; Jim Finch, Georgia Department of Community Affairs; Margaret Holt, College of Education; Hoppy Hopkins, Reddick Construction Co.; John Jeffreys, Fanning Institute; Bill Lambert, Extension Service; Helen Mills, Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach; Kim Sarabia, student; Lindsay Thomas, Georgia Chamber of Commerce; and Rob Williams, Triangle Associates.
The director oversees the institutes outreach programs as well as financial management and personnel administration. The committee will recommend a successor for Director Melba Cooper, who is retiring Dec. 31 after 34 years of service.
Both directors are expected to begin their tenure Feb. 1, 2001.
